Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
