In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
