The Cadillac F1 team Utilizes Apollo Program Approach to Assemble Unit from Nothing for Australian Race Debut.

Approximately a full year ago at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the Cadillac racing team were ultimately given the go-ahead as F1's latest participant for 2026. Constructing the organization from scratch has involved a hectic work rate that the principal, Graeme Lowdon, has compared to the Apollo program. As Formula One converges on Las Vegas this race weekend, Cadillac know time is getting tight.

The Tight Timeline to Melbourne

At the season finale of the championship to be hosted in the United States, with approximately three months to go before they make their debut for the maiden outing in Melbourne at the 2026 opener, the Cadillac F1 project have advanced rapidly but, in what must seem like a monumental task, they are aware there will not be sufficient time.

The chief technical officer, Nick Chester, joined the nascent team in early 2023 not long after it was established, when the organization were without even an official entry. He has been at its center since then and enjoys a amused expression when reflecting on the experience.

“There might be a brief moment looking back at what you have accomplished and say: ‘Amazing, what an achievement what we have built in a short three-year period,’” Chester states. “But then the following moment you consider: ‘Well, we’ve still got a significant amount to do.’”

An Unprecedented Challenge

Chester enjoyed success at the Renault team in the driver Fernando Alonso's title-winning seasons of 2005/2006 and was in control of engineering strategy at the then-new Mercedes electric racing team, but no previous experience has been quite like the task of introducing the all-American Cadillac name, a works entry supported by the corporate entity, General Motors Corporation, into the pinnacle of motorsport.

“Creating an F1 team from the ground up, when are you ever going to get a chance to do that?” Chester remarks. “It's unparalleled. In an established team you don’t get the opportunity to alter organizational mindset.”

With each passing day that elapses focus are sharper on the approaching critical moment in Australia and targets are being handled.

“One must presume that a brand-new squad coming in is probably going to finish last but just making it to the starting line will be an achievement in itself,” Lowdon commented this year and while Nick Chester agreed with this sentiment he believed the organization had a point to prove as well.
“The initial objective we intend to prove is that we should be there,” he says. “So that we arrive and we perform competently. We aim to demonstrate that this is a professional operation doing the correct procedures on the track. After we’ve shown that we are a legitimate team, then we will focus on improvement subsequently.”

Racing Talent and Team Building Effort

In late summer they signed Checo Pérez and Valtteri as their pilots for 2026, a tandem distinguished for their priceless expertise in performing at the front in two championship-winning squads, Red Bull and Mercedes-AMG, and Valtteri Bottas expressed the mood of determined optimism.

“Naturally, we have a realistic outlook,” he said. “We face a massive task to do, and we expect almost certainly a difficult start, because this is Formula One. But we’re not there to finish last. I am confident with this structure, with these individuals, this staff, there is every reason that we shouldn’t be able to get relatively quickly to the front and achieve good results.”

To realize that ambition hiring has been in full swing, with employees now up to in excess of 400 and planned to reach the objective of 600 rapidly. In addition to their present headquarters at the UK base, the organization are in the process of completing an HQ at the Fishers location in Indy and there is the General Motors facility in Charlotte, where they are developing the facility to manufacture the new engine, planned for the 2029 season – in the meantime they will use Ferrari power units – and the aerodynamic facility in Cologne. It is a complex organization, different from the direction in Formula One for more centralization, and has led to the innovative team culture to which Nick Chester referred to.

Space Mission Inspiration

“We've drawn heavily from the Apollo project,” remarked the team principal shortly before the British GP in mid-season. “We’re realistic, we recognize how tough it is. The schedules, are extremely compressed. OK, we aren't launching a lunar mission, but it feels like it sometimes.”

So they have adopted, rather than the conventional chain of command, a flat management structure akin to that of Nasa’s, where there were a range of specialist groups all tackling various components of the program across a different facilities.

“If you have to go through a process where someone has a problem and they report it to their manager, that leader talks to a manager somewhere else, it travels back down, it’s super slow,” notes Chester. “Therefore we enable people to really get on with it. Moving away from hierarchical consent for all decisions is so much cleaner and quicker.”

What Lies Ahead

The success of this agile methodology will be proven in the pressure of racing when the season begins and there is a considerable amount at stake for Formula One, too. Cadillac have recruited as their development driver the young Californian Colton Herta
