Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, demons, and dark forces growing in strength within the urban setting.

Note: Revealing details for the third episode of this adventure lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The latest chapter ended with a major cliffhanger and introduced the first table of heroes who will separate from the main group to undertake their separate journey, separate from the additional parties.

This warrior group includes Teor Pridesire (brought to life by the voice actor), the agile character (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

With an extensive roster, it was clear from the start that maintaining everyone at one table would be unworkable.

That’s why, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Introduction, connecting the individual narratives before splitting into three smaller tables: Fighters, Strategists, and Questers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

Per the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for participants who enjoy a traditionally charged battle-oriented gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might appear out of place, but the events of episode 3 make it clear why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

First, the group has a clear idea where to proceed after a intense initial meeting with the enemy group.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose passing initiated the narrative’s action—used the enemy for his selfish purposes, breaking into the secret base, attacking Thimble, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then paid off his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, north of the city, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each adventurer has a specific drive to depart the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, wants revenge.
  • Kattigan knows Timmony and warns that it is a hostile place.
  • The strong character and The healer, having resisted his family’s wishes to execute the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their status as prominent individuals in House Halovar could enable the party enter places they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character swore a eternal obligation to The savior for his salvation and will now follow him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are wanted by the powers that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • Thimble and The character are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and The healer betrayed the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the clan.

This leaves them no alternative but to journey toward Timmony in quest for Casimir.

Future Episodes

From the recent installment’s Cooldown, we learn that the warrior group will not appear the following episode, leaving the remaining eight players to assemble the Questers and Schemers groups.

Fans can anticipate learning which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the story’s concluding setup installment, released on the upcoming Thursday.
